Critical Commentary

Design Statement: I selected this visualization to put the toxicity of the politics of hate into a numerical representation.

  • 2017 was the third year in a row where hate crimes have increased in California.
  • Experts place the blame on a combination of Trumpism and the increase in organized hate groups in California.
  • Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino, also highlighted the changing face of demographics in California.

This image represents toxicity by putting visually the statistical proof of a problem taking place in California. A state that had once been in a decline of hate to make such a shift into an uptick of hate crimes is a phenomenon that needs definitive research.
