Critical Commentary

This is an image from 2017. The photo shows volunteers cleaning up an oil spill that happened near North Chennai's Kamarajar port, after two tankers collided into one another. This reminds me of Laura Bear's theorization of risks faced by river bureaucrats whose jobs of maintaining the river Hooghly in Kolkata have gotten riskier as austerity measures have cut funding for ports (in her book Navigating Austerity).
