In 2016, President Park's close associate (the daughter of a shaman, who was a friend to President Park's father, also another president of South Korea) was discovered to have been carrying out a shadow presidency, where she was making an enormous number of decisions ranging from major government contracts to what President Park wore for a press conference. This was the end of a long line of protests against her, including the Sewol Ferry protest.
