Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was a Portugese "explorer" who organized the Spanish expedition to the "East Indies" from 1519 to 1522. Known for the "first" complete circumnavigation of the globe. His work and name inspired many projects and entities including Project Magellan (a Cold-War era US Navy project to circumnavigate the world by submarine), NASA's magellan spacecraft (the first interplanetary mission to be launched on a spaceshuttle), the Magellan telescopes, and the Magellanic clouds (two dwarf galaxies visible in the Southern hemisphere).
