I found the juxtaposition of all the different elements of this photo quite stark. The garden near the freeway with a sense of breakdown in infrastructure (garnered from the cracks in the road and chipping of paint on various surfaces) shows how communities will continue to exist in harmful environments. However, these environments will continue to impact these communities in subtle yet harmful ways.

I was calmed by this image. It was a rather peaceful landscape - the sunset in the background, the tall trees along the road, and the rows of cars. As a native Californian, this image evoked a feeling of nostalgia. However, knowing that the freeway ison the other side of the trees, I remember the thickening of air around such parts of the city and I remember how such clean lines and tranquil landscapes truly contrast with the reality of the freeway and its impact on the environment.

At first glance, I noticed how clean the image is. It is clear, with a bright blue background. I was impressed by how clean it is. The critical commentary draws focus to the "trash" on the clean surface and to glimpses of the freeway underneath; however, even the trash (the tin can) is shiny and it's hard to see past the cleanness of the image.

my immediate impression is: pretty.  the radial pattern is simple and pretty, something a kid would do at a fair or as part of a simple science demonstration.  But then the commentary makes me wonder, intellectually, what am i looking at?  What chemical reactions are behind the pattern, accounting for it? What can we learn from the different colors, the different positionings of closer to or farther from the center?
